CHICAGO: Oh, the Food!

When
discussing eating in Chicago, let us not
forget the "most important meal of the day."
A gem of a choice for breakfast, Toast is a little cafe
with three locations (Bucktown, Lincoln Park, and River North). Bright,
clean and cheerful, with a friendly, neighborhood feel, the cafe's menu
caters to both traditional and more exploratory tastes.
While I was tempted by the intriguing pancake choices (including lemon
poppy seed pancakes, and the seasonal special, eggnog pancakes) I couldn't
pass up the opportunity to try their vegetarian eggs benedict.
The soft-boiled eggs nested on a bed of fresh steamed spinach and artichoke
hearts, all resting on a foundation of tender, delectable English muffin
halves. Blanketed by a hollandaise sauce spiked with white truffle oil,
it was a rich melding of flavors and textures.
Ok, so low-fat and vegan it's not, but I can try their tofu some other
time.
While my short visit did not enable me to experience anything close to
a comprehensive sample of Chicago cuisine, it left me with fond food memories
and the anticipation of a return visit to enjoy even more of that "Sweet
Home" cookin'.
