Best
Foods for Picnics:
Fruit
- Apples and oranges
hold up best in backpacks, but buy what's in season.
Vegetables -
Carrots and tomatoes don't need cooking and do well without
refrigeration.
Bread - Look for freshly baked; towns and
regions have their own specialties.
Cheese - Italy is the land of
1000 cheeses, try as many as you can.
Antipasti - Delis are a great source of
marinated everything, from olives to eggplant.
Juice - Apple and grape seem to stand up
to heat better than orange.
Dolci - Try little bakeries for the local
favorite treats; look in markets for candy you can't find
at home.

Early the next day, I went out in search of breakfast.
The Trionfale Market on Via
Andrea Doria is ideal for the hungry budget traveler, with
fresh fruit and vegetables (both familiar and unusual), bread,
cheese, and most anything else you might like to pick up for
a morning picnic.

It's not self-serve!
The signora in the red sweater will fuss at you if
you try to pick out your own grapes. These muscats (each one
a mouthful) were nectar-sweet.

Notice the bags of peeled garlic cloves
on the left, and the pre-chopped vegetables for minestrone
soup on the right.
