SHOPPING
TIPS

Watch those fingers -
You may think you
are indicating you want "one" of something when
you hold up your index finger, but shopkeepers may think
you want "two" because your thumb is counted as
the "first" finger. If you only want one, give
a "thumb's up!"

Check the Clock -
Stores may have different hours than you're used to. Be
aware that shops often close for long lunch hours in the
afternoon.

Bring a Bag -
Many grocery
stores charge a small fee to provide you with a bag for
your purchases.

At
the Trionfale Market, I stood
in line with the locals. I
enjoyed feeling of simply participating in daily life here,
rubbing elbows with folks whose lives don't depend on the
tourist trade.

The center of the market
was an endless sea of produce, and around the perimeter little
stalls provided bread, cheese and meat. At seven-thirty in
the morning, the bread was still warm from the oven.

Cheese is sliced
to order from great wedges and wheels, and sold by
the etto (100 grams). One etto makes a generous single serving,
or enough to save for a snack after a long morning of museums
and churches.
