Trajan's
Column
Dating back to 112 A.D., the carvings on the column
form a continuous narrative (mouse over photo for detail).

Spanish
Steps
Trod upon
by the likes of Keats, Shelley, Wagner, and Goethe (and
now, me!), this area was once the artistic and literary
center of Rome.
Notes
on Night in Rome
It may have been naive of me,
but I felt no fear traipsing around downtown Rome in the
dark with my hostel buddies. The only tension came when
we decided to head home, and it appeared that we were too
late for the last bus back.
After unhappily calculating how
many miles we were going to have to walk, blessed relief
came at last in the form of the first early morning bus.

A little rain did not deter
us from an exploration of Rome's landmarks at night. With two
new friends from the hostel, we encountered one floodlit wonder
after another.

The Trevi Fountain, featured
in the song and movie Three
Coins in the Fountain (as well as Fellini's La
Dolce Vita). Legend says tossing in a coin guarantees
your return to Rome. (It worked for me, but then I had to
come back to catch my flight home.)

The Colosseum is grand and
imposing in the darkness, doubtless haunted by the souls of
thousands who perished there.

The Forum by night is impressively
magical and otherworldly. I looked forward to returning in
the next day to explore its heart.
