Duomo
Whoa!
Florence's brick-domed Cathedral dominates the city, dwarfing
all other buildings.

Florence's
great Cathedral is named Santa Maria del Fiore,
but everyone simply calls it the Duomo. Begun in
1296, construction was not completed for over a century and
a half.
The remarkable dome, designed by Brunelleschi,
was the largest since the Pantheon.
A fitting crown for a powerful and thriving prince of cities.

The scaffolding which obscured part or all of so many landmark
buildings during my visit did actually serve a purpose, as
made apparent by the before and after I noticed here.

Florentine
Heaven
The frescoed inner dome depicts Jesus holding court with his
angels, apostles and saints. I'm told that the black hole
above Jesus' head (mouse over to zoom in) is positioned to
let the sun shine in at the summer solstice.
