CHAPTER 46 LOCATION: Florence SUBJECT: The Sad Women of Santa Croce
 

Missing Michelangelo
Not a resplendent angel, or a Grecian goddess, I love this figure in peasant garb, with her sleeves rolled up, sculpted by Giorgio Vasari in 1570.

Regretting the Demise of Rossini
Gioacchino Rossini died in Paris, and has an empty grave there, but his remains eventually ended up here, in his home town.

A lot of important people are buried in Santa Croce, and to ensure that they are not forgotten through the ages, some are fortunate enough to have their final resting place graced with one or more mournful marble women to endlessly regret their passing.

Tired of Tears?
This classically garbed maiden has a book at her feet (in case grieving the loss of statesman Pompeio Iosephi ever gets too tiresome?).

Earlier on this day I had called my ex-fiance. I told him I had to know, was there any chance of our reconciling? There was a long, trans-Atlantic pause, and then the answer, "No."

Now, circling around Santa Croce, I added myself to the retinue of sad women, grieving for things that could never be.
