If, like mine, your budget accommodations in Florence
lack a heart stopping view, you need only stroll
over to the Piazzale Michelangelo.
The Piazzale is reached from the city center by a pleasant
walk across the Arno to the south. A tree lined
trail snakes its way up the hill, opening every
so often for a Florentine panorama. The angle of the view
changes with the ascent, until finally the large, flat rectangular
top is reached.
The piazzale itself is not much to look at, a giant David
copy dominating its center.

Unless
you go very early, it's likely the square will be crowded,
either with busloads of tourists or groups of locals out for
some fresh air. I'm told this area is also a classic
make-out point for Florentines. But you came for
the views, and the views all around are marvelous.

Classic
Florence
Embraced
by a bridge-spanned Arno, the cityscape of Florence delights
the eye with its rich pallet of brick reds, yellow ochres,
shades of cream, sand and olive, backed by slate blue hills
under a moody sky. Major landmarks can be seen, including
the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio (yellow-brown, near the center),
Giotto's Tower (light-colored, toward the right) and the unmistakable
Duomo dome (brick, with white marble ribs, far right).
