Solid
as a Rock
The walls at the base of the towers are a dozen
feet thick, necessary to support the weight of all that
stone.

The
town of San Gimignano is most famous as the "Medieval
Manhattan" because of its skyline of towers.
There were once as many as 72 such towers. Enough still remain
standing to accommodate more than a dozen Rapunzels.
All that architecture resulted from
the rivalry of the town's richest and most powerful families,
each competing to build the tallest structure, and thus prove
its preeminence.
