Ampelmannchen, Berlin, Germany. When the two Berlins reunited, folks seemed eager to demolish some of the trappings of the communist regime, like, well, the wall. But the people rose up in protest when the East German ampelmannchen (little figures who signal "walk" and "don't walk" at street corners) were threatened with replacement. In the end, the power of the people triumphed, and the ampelmannchen, strutting along with their jaunty little hats, remain a fixture in the former East Berlin.
