Medieval streets bloom, Assisi, Italy. Every June a flowering balcony competition makes exploring the town even more enjoyable. At every turn, terra cotta pots bulge with dense green foliage with bright red and pink blossoms. Most streets in the ancient center are too narrow and steep with stairs to permit car traffic. Once I leave the main tourist areas, the lanes and alleyways are hushed and near-deserted.
