Masterpiece in progress, Barcelona, Spain. In 1884, Antonio Gaudi began his work on La Sagrada Familia, envisioning his most ambitious work. Gaudi was 74 when he died in 1926, and his models and plans were largely destroyed by a 1936 fire. Work began again in 1940, and continues, funded by admission fees and contributions. Miraculously, broken shards of Gaudi's plaster models were recently discovered and are painstakingly being pieced together, helping to reveal his original intentions.
