Scars of history, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg, Austria. Although the construction of Hohensalzburg began in the 11th century (and has been updated and enlarged many times since then), the defenses of the fortress have never been breached by enemies.

During the Peasants' War in the 16th century, disgruntled commoners commandeered a cannon, and a projectile was fired through the window of the prince's residence from the city below. This chipped column of Untersberg marble is the only visible sign of attack still evident from this building's long history.
