ENGLAND<< YESTERDAY'S PICTUREALL PICTURES

Forewarned in seven languages, London, England. The Tower of London is a popular international tourist destination, and with good reason: it brims with checkered history. Over the last 900 years, it has been a royal palace and fortress, arsenal, prison and place of execution, mint, jewel house and menagerie.

Watching over all are the shadowy ravens of the Tower. Legend has it that "at least six ravens must remain lest both Tower and Monarchy fall." Taking no chances, the ravens are looked after by a Yeoman Raven Master, and their wings are kept clipped to discourage them from straying too far afield.

The birds are popular with the Tower's many visitors, necessitating these multi-lingual signs, warning of the possible consequences of too-close an interaction.
