Garden of Exile and Emigration, Berlin, Germany. The Garden of Exile and Emigration is a permanent installation in Berlin's excellent Jüdisches (Jewish) Museum.

The work is composed of 49 square cement pillars, each almost 20 feet high, arranged in a tight square of seven rows of seven pillars. 48 of the pillars are filled with soil from Israel, one pillar is filled with Berlin soil. Olive trees grow out of the pillar tops, symbolizing peace and hope.

To walk between the pillars is a discomforting experience, inducing a shadowy feeling of isolation and disconnection that can only be relieved by craning one's neck up to catch a glimpse of the sky between the branches high above.
