Varenna, Lake Como, Italy. I found myself in Varenna rather unexpectedly, when the train dropped me off in this small, exclusive lakeside resort. I had planned to go across the lake to the more affordable Menaggio, but the last ferry had already departed; such are the risks when being spontaneous. Burdened by my big backpack, I wandered into the first bar/hotel I came to, a small, family-run place, and was able, with a little bargaining, to secure a room for the night for about 3x what I'd pay for the hostel in Menaggio then next night.
