Sizable pieces of the wall are getting harder to find, as souvenir-hunters ("wall woodpeckers") have chipped away and carted off so much of it. This article traces some of the paths parts of the wall have taken. Almost 15 years into the reunification, reminders are fast disappearing of the divided city and the wall where at least 100 people lost their lives attempting to cross to freedom. The Museum at Checkpoint Charlie helps preserve these memories, and educate visitors about non-violent struggles for human rights around the world. The museum highlights the stories of many creative escape attempts, often accompanied by the actual equipment used. The most moving part of my visit was watching the actual television footage of the celebrations as people from both sides began to tear the wall down.
