When is a Bridge not a Bridge, Avignon, France. When it's the Saint Bénezet bridge --also known as 'le pont d’Avignon', made famous the world over by the children's' song "Sur le Pont d’Avignon".

It's not really a bridge, because it doesn't actually connect anything, consisting of just four spans that jut halfway out over the Rhône River and stop.

It wasn't always this way, of course. Constructed between 1171 and 1185, it suffered damage in many floods, eventually leading to its present condition in 1600.

Still, thousands come to Avignon to dance a few steps on the bridge, drawn by the power of a song they learned long ago. For more about this interesting landmark, check out this informative site.
