The causeway is comprised of some 40,000 black basalt columns. Scientists say these unique, honeycomb-shaped columns were formed by volcanic activity 50–60 million years ago. But legend says they are the work of the giant Finn McCool. The causeway is the remains of a highway Finn built to bring his giant Scottish lady friend back to his Irish home. |
