Lucky martyr, Prague, Czech Republic. The Charles Bridge, a Prague city landmark, is decorated with a number of statues, the most famous being the one of St. John of Nepomuk, a Czech martyr saint executed during the reign of Wenceslas IV by being thrown into the Vltava River from the bridge.

Here you see a detail of that scene, as depicted on a plaque on the statue. The spot depicting the saint is polished by the fingertips of countless people who've touched it over the centuries.

Touching the statue is said to bring good luck and guarantee that the individual returns to Prague. I hope that superstition proves true; I would enjoy another visit here.
