Unlike most church towers, the trip is not made by climbing steps, but walking up a series of 35 gently inclining ramps, wide enough to accommodate two guards on horseback. The current church was built in 1401 on the site of a mosque, and the tower was once a minaret from which the Islamic faithful were called to prayer. From this height one can study the fascinating Gothic details of the cathedral's buttresses and statuary. |
