Just a quick note before I head off to bed...I'm in charming Galway, Ireland, tonight. Having a terrific time with a great group of people, seeing some amazingly beautiful scenery, and getting a headful of Irish history and culture. Sadly, I lack the energy or coherence to do justice to describing my day right now, but I look forward to going on about it at length at my earliest opportunity. If anyone has any questions relating to the Emerald Isle, I have access to two great guides who can give me some answers...email your inquires, or just click "comments" below, and I will see what I can find out. Until then, a good night to you all!

Hi friends! A blustery day here in Dublin, but the sun finally broke through this afternoon...so tired last night that the only thing I wrote in my journal for yesterday was the date. The symphony of the fifteen other people in the room snoring the night away didn't even bother me overmuch. From my bunk on the second floor I could lie down and see the night lights of Dublin reflecting in the River Liffey, flowing by right outside my window.

It is an interesting time to be in Ireland, on the anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916, the beginning of Ireland's civil war. The tour bus I was on had to be diverted because of the group of people gathered for the commemoration of the event, and the green, white and orange flags were everywhere flapping in the brisk breeze.

Tomorrow I leave for a 6 day whirlwind tour of the south and west of Ireland, then it's back to Dublin for a day or two, then on to France. I met a man, Gregory, at the hostel last night who gave me some great tips about where to travel in France...he's French himself, and works in a cooperage (making barrels for the wine trade). Gregory is just one of a growing number of French people I am meeting whose friendliness defies the unkind stereotypes about the French.

Time's up here...got to find some dinner, get a shower, and get ready for tomorrow's big adventure. Enjoy a pint of Guinness tonight, and think of me!

Just a quick note to let you know I've touched ground in Ireland...must now go find my bed for the night...hope to write much more very soon.

By the way, do you know about Backpack Nation? Founder Brad Newsham says, "I like to think that Backpack Nation can overwhelm the world with kindness, which is theoretically more powerful and certainly more attractive than terror." Check out http://www.backpacknation.org.

Now, where did me Lucky Charms go?

Greeting from Scotland! I will be writing more soon, but I wanted to be sure to call your attention to the new photos that are available from the first two weeks of my travels...I hope to have captions for them soon, as some will only make sense that way, but go ahead and check them out.

I have so much more to tell you about...Bath, Stonehenge, Avebury, Castle Combe, as well as Edinburgh, and my three day tour of the Scottish highlands, including the Isle of Syke and Loch Ness! But the internet cafe is closing, so I will have to get back to you again soon...until then, send me email!
