Some More Good News:
Another item for the silent auction: Alicia Robb, director of the Foundation for Sustainable Development, has donated a beautiful alpaca scarf, gloves and hat from Peru, one of the five countries in which the foundation sponsors internships. If you are looking for an extended overseas volunteer experience, they can help you find the opportunity for you.
A new friend: One of the wonderful people I met at the Travel Tales event last weekend is Sami Sunchild, owner of the Red Victorian Bed, Breakfast & Art on Haight St. in San Francisco, a "peaceful world travelers' hotel." I'm planning on visiting the Red Vic this Sunday for one of their Breakfast Coversations, a chance to meet and share ideas with travelers and locals. Sound interesting? You can contact Andy (415) 255-7992 for more information.

Abandoned Blogs? Not This One!
Today I read in this CNN.com article that, although "There are over 4 million blogs on the net...At least two thirds of the blogs out there today have not been updated in months."
While I'm not usually THAT slow to update, I do want to make more of an effort to share with you all what's happening more regularly. This should be easy, considering all the great material that is coming my way these days.
A couple of items: I've received confirmation of two exciting speakers for my public event on November 15th: accomplished traveler-philanthropist Marc Gold (who's been around the world seven times, working miracles with small amounts of money), and international speaker and author Elena Simons (who, at age 52, walked alone across America).
And, if that's not enough to entice you, there's the silent auction: last week I received donations of autographed travel books from Traveler's Tales, a heavenly two-hour Trager bodywork session from noted professional Natasha Heifetz, and a complete dog or cat dental cleaning from Peigi Cleminshaw of Hounds's Tooth Check.
Do you know anyone who would be willing to donate their goods or services? All the money received from the silent auction will be going directly to support people and projects in third world areas, and will be reported on here (so everyone can know about the miracles they are helping to make). Thanks for considering becoming part of the project!

What a great evening!
If you weren't there, you missed a great evening last Saturday... Famed travel writer Jeff Greenwald (ethicaltraveler.com) mesmerized the group with his storytelling and introduced his concept of ethical travel, Marc Gold (100friends.com) told inspirational tales about his philanthropy around the world, travel writer Li Miao had us all in stitches with her experience as a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago, and tour guide Jean Feilmoser had us on the edge of our seats with her tale about the night she met Dracula. Michael McCarthy of the Intentional Traveler, who deserves all the credit for organizing the event, spun a few yarns of his own and did a fine job as M.C.
left to right: Jeff Greenwald, Li Miao, Jean Feilmoser, Michael McCarthy, Marc Gold, and yours truly
If you live in the Bay Area, and like to hear a good tale, or better yet, like to tell one of your own, check the Intentional Traveler site for information about upcoming events.

Italian Adventure -- in Switzerland?
Don't ask, just go there! To my "Italian Adventure" site... where I have just added three more picturesque chapters about, well, Switzerland. As all good travelers know, sometimes you direct the trip, and sometimes the trip directs you.
If you haven't checked it out before, the site is a long, soap-opera-y love letter to Italy, with more than 70 short, picture-packed chapters, created from my first experience with solo travel in 1999. Only halfway complete, I work on it sporadically when the spirit moves me.

My Big Announcement
When I first created whereisliz.com, I envisioned it simply as a way to share my love of travel. But as the web site grew, and now is read by thousands of people around the world, my vision of its possibilities has grown, too.
I think we have a choice when we travel. Some people seek only vacation (rest, recharge, renewal), which is a necessary and worthy goal. But I want something more meaningful: I want to be different as a result of the places I’ve seen, the things I’ve done, and especially, the interactions with the people I’ve met.
It’s this vision of transformative travel that I will expand upon in a public event scheduled for Saturday, November 15, 2003.
Included in the evening’s entertainment will be an audio/visual presentation of my 4-month solo trip through Europe. The evening will also be an opportunity for people to share with each other about places they have been to, or hope to travel to in the future. Additionally, global travel experts (soon to be announced) will be on hand to share their insights.
What a lot of us don’t realize is that every time we travel, we are, in effect, ambassadors. We directly help form the impression that people in other countries have of our homeland.
The world’s problems are big, and none of us alone can solve all of them, but we can each do something to make the world a better place. Small efforts can add up in ways we can’t even imagine.
This is my attempt to help, by bringing a community of caring people together in support of world peace and global understanding.
My mission is tri-fold: To learn how to be a global ambassador, to teach others how to do it, and to allow everyone to participate by sharing what they have, be it time, talent or resources.
Admission to the evening’s event is free, and funds will be raised by the sale of refreshments and with a silent auction of goods and services donated by local businesses (including pajamas by Bay Area designer (and Oprah’s favorite) Karen Neuburger (karenneuburger.com)). All proceeds will go toward the support of people and projects in third world areas through the Where Is Liz Peace Partnership.
Everyone attending will receive a Peace Partnership Passport, complete with his or her photograph as a Global Ambassador, supplied in generous support by professional photographer Lori Cheung (thePortraitPhotographer.com).
Please consider joining me for a transformative evening!
