Something to be thankful for...
Here's a bit of fan mail I got just the other day:
_ _ _
I want to thank you for this article, "On the Road to Forgiveness." I really find it so enlightening and I'm so grateful that I read this before I go for my trip in Spain.
All in all, I really like what you're doing!!! Keep up the great work Liz! You're just like a light in my life. =)
Thanks for that.
Have a great day!!!
Best regards,
Jane (Malaysia)

I also want to let you know that I've done some restructuring on the Picture of the Day section, to make it easier to click from photo to photo, and to view the photos by country. And I could remind you that beautiful prints of these photos are available for sale, but not today, since it's Buy Nothing Day.
Peace, love and gratitude,
Liz

We did it!
The Transformational Travel event last Saturday was quite an evening, generating comments from attendees like, "Inspiring!" and "Life-altering!" The event featuring speakers Marc Gold, Elena Symonds, and myself was well-received if lightly attended, which meant that the silent auction buyers got some great bargains! Even so, we managed to raise a total of $416 in bids and donations, 100% of which will go to support projects in the third world.
I was especially excited that the evening was also the world-premiere of my first "movie," a 10-minute featurette of images and music from my last trip, a 4-month solo backpacking journey across Europe. I'm afraid I've caught the movie-making bug, and bad. I'm thinking about transferring it to DVD with custom menus, extras, and director's commentary!
Several people have said they'd like another chance to attend the event, and I've already received two offers for places to host it, one in the center of San Francisco, and another in the South Bay. I learned so much from putting this first event together, first and foremost that I need to get more help in the planning, preparation, and publicity to make sure that those who would be interested know it is happening. If you are interested in joining my newly-formed "Board of Helpers," please let me know.
Also, I want to thank Michael McCarthy for his generous introduction, Robert Iwamiya for his always able technical support, Alicia Robb, Nichole Mowery and Suzi Musgrove for their invaluable help before, during and after the event, photographer Lori Cheung for making us all look so good, Rob Dweck for his delicious home-baked vegan treats and equipment loan, Jeff Shapiro for donation of beverages, and Russell Jackman of CALMputer Repair for loan of the video projector.
And not least of all, thanks again to our silent auction donors for their generous contributions:

Networking with Sand in My Bra
In case you haven't yet heard, Sand in My Bra and Other Misadventures is the hilarious new bestseller published by Traveler's Tales. The collection includes stories from Anne Lamott, Ellen Degeneres, Adair Lara, Sarah Vowell, Margo Kaufman and Sandra Tsing Loh.
Last night I had the pleasure of meeting the editor of this book (who also has a racy tale of her own in it) Jennifer L. Leo. The occasion was the First Fridays Travel Writing Event at the Writers' Center of Marin.
Vibrant and witty, Jennifer treated us to samples from the book, and also gave us the insider perspective about how the book was put together, along with lots of great advice about how to get published. She also generously donated an autographed copy of Sand in My Bra and Other Misadventures for the silent auction at the Transformational Travel Event (see earlier posts below for details) on Saturday, November 15th.
And if that weren't enough, I also got to chat with Laurie King, another travel writer whose work is included in the brand new book The Kindness of Strangers. Laurie will be on hand at Book Passage in Corte Madera tomorrow night at 7 p.m. for a book reading and signing. Laurie is well-known in the travel writing community for compiling a great resource: the SF Bay Area Travel Writer's Calendar of Events.

Oh, Wow!
What else can I say? The Red Victorian Bed & Breakfast has just added an amazing donation to the silent auction -- three fantastic Family Reunion packages:
Bed and Breakfast together for 2 days in 2 rooms for 2 generations of family ($680 value)
Bed and Breakfast together for 3 days in 3 rooms for 3 generations of family ($1020 value)
Bed and Breakfast together for 4 days in 4 rooms for 4 generations of family ($1360 value)
And the Red Victorian is no ordinary place to stay... each room uniquely celebrates a different theme (check out their web site). Included is the delicious Red Vic breakfast (like this one I enjoyed last Sunday):
Additionally, the Gallery of Peace Arts has donated five colorful, inspiring posters for the auction.
Big thanks to Sami Sunchild and the Red Victorian for their support!
